My theory is that the people creating this music are in their mid 20's, so would have grown up hearing things in the mid 80's. Nostalgia therefore is what this is about as each successive generation of artists repeats in their own art the things that defined their early childhood. An eternal return of the same as Lacan would say.
In this sense a lot of the music I am talking about now is part of the next movement but of course also part of the one before. It seems only a huge shift can cut this trajectory and open up a totally NEW crack from which everything else will emerge.
In vis art think Pollock pouring paint on canvas and breaking with hundreds of years of art tradition, one of my favourite lines of all time is in the movie Pollock when his partner Lee Krasner saw what he had done with his first drip painting and said to him "Oh Jackson, you've cracked it wide open". Still gives me shivers. Such a beautiful thing to say and on point, he had cracked it wide open. That was the beginning of the next movement right there at that moment in time. P
Here are a few other examples of beautiful artistic moments that have cracked it wide open:
The Sex Pistols play Anarchy in the UK in 1976 and give birth to punk:-
The Sugarhill gang perform Raper's Delight in 1979 and give birth to hip hop:-
Kraftwerk invent electonica. It wasn't this particular tune, but it was close, you get the idea:-
Picasso paints Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Arguably the first postmodern artwork:-
Stop thinking of a 'new movement,' and get to work.
ReplyDeleteHunter S. Thompson (arguably the most influential American writer of my time) carried on the literary traditions of Burroughs, Kerouac and Twain and created a writing style and influenced thousands of writers and journalists.
Kraftwerk were pioneers building on the backs of Sun Ra, Teddy Riley and Karlheinz Stockhausen and changed the sound of music.
The Sugar Hill Gang adroitly merged the beats of Parliament and Sly and the Family Stone with the poetry of the Last Poets and Gil Scot Heron.
The Sex Pistols were the creation of Malcolm McLaren and Johnny Lyden to cash in on the New York Dolls and the Ramones.
You may get lucky and be able to create the next movement like McLaren.
Or put your self out there and create. Easier said than done I know. Stop philosophizing and get to work.
I believe these things happen organically and you need collaboration. Very few artists work in a vacuum. The curse of the artist is the abuse of judgement. Look who is talking, fuck I am a hypocrite.
I do think this blog is a great idea but you need to share it with the world. Even if only a few people read it. You need people to say you are full of shit. You need people to say you are great. You need to fight through the support/criticism, negativity/positivity to create, fight, laugh, day dream and live.
Look at the fucked up people in this world. One generation was told they need grow up and be a man, stand up and take the shit and have a shot of temporary euphoria. While the next generation were told they were extraordinary and that all problems could be solved on a couch with a bottle of coddling.
Fuck this rant has gone on too long.
I am sober!
